Listening to your "Mother's Intuition"

There are so many confusing signals, advertisements, pieces of advice, words-to-the-wise, articles, radio discussions, podcasts and forum posts out there, telling us how "best" to raise our children.

I have found, with my two children, that the only decisions I have regretted making regarding their health & upbringing were the times that I listened to something or someone while disregarding my own "Mother's Intuition"or in other words, ignoring what my heart was telling me.

My Mother's Intuition has saved my children's lives on occasion. It has averted dangerous situations, kept them happy and smiling, and frequently been proven true by one study or another at some later date.

I keep informed, of course, and have books on natural remedies, and read books and articles on parenting and children, selectively sorting out what I think makes sense and what I think is utter nonsense best left to rearing canines.

I breastfeed until the children quit on their own. I follow my hunches. I know that I know my children almost as well as they know themselves and what is "normal" for them. I believe in myself and my babies as we labour together when they are born. I trust our dyad to know instinctively what we need to do at all times, in all situations.

I have at times glimpsed the fact that "my heart" is actually my children themselves, the ones who made me into a mother, and who truly do know in their hearts what is going on with them, what they need, what is best for them.

The result is that I never feel defensive, haunted, or guilty when questioned about my parenting, my extended breastfeeding, or most anything I have done in my career as a mother while mothering from my heart, that is to say, following my children's cues and signals and really listening to them.

The other times will likely trouble me forever.

A few of our favourite things!

Fall is here, at least in the Fashion world. Our first shipment of Boob Design nursing wear is here, and we have some favourites to share! To see the full collection, go to www.evymama.ca
Pictured above are the BOOB Design (of Sweden) B Warmer Nursing hoodie, and the Dallas nursing dress by the same company.
The Dallas dress has a slight twinkle to the fabric, making it perfect for Fall and suitable as a Holiday piece as well. The hoodie has an underbust layer of ultra soft fleece, so that you stay cool all over, but your bosom stays cozy and warm. Scandinavian midwives believe that keeping the breasts warm prevents plugged ducts and encourages milk flow, and this top is designed with this theory in mind.
We think it's smart because you'll be opening your top a lot in some pretty cold weather if you live anywhere near us!

Ponyo: a Disney movie that talks about breastfeeding!

It's rare that I'm totally wowed by a kids' movie.

We took our daughter and son to see this Japanese film tonight at The Cumberland, and we were just as impressed as the kids were.

The movie has an environmental theme, but isn't preachy. It's magical and cool, and age-appropriate for our 4.5 and 2.5 year-olds by virtue of its pace and content. Our little guy was pretending to be Ponyo [falling asleep and turning back into a fish] all the way home.

We usually find that Disney movies are too frenetically-paced for our little ones, and that some of the content is questionable as they try to sneak jokes in that are really meant for the adults watching.

With this in mind, we are REALLY impressed by Disney for presenting this film to a North American audience. They dubbed it with famous American actors' voices (people like Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Tina Fey & Lily Tomlin, to name a few).

Refreshingly, there were none of the ubiquitous baby bottles that you see in ALL American products for kids, and the character Ponyo even has breastfeeding explained to her by a nursing mom in this movie! I was so happy!

It was also a nice intro to some elements of Japanese culture and film for our babes.

We read some reviews that questioned "why the two five-year-olds get left at home in an emergency", or that called it "too weird" ...but this film is pure fantasy, so why not just embrace it for what it is, and not question it? Our kids found it exciting!

Evymama's First Anniversary Event Wrap-Up

Last weekend, October 17-19, Evymama celebrated its first anniversary!

The Evymamas would like to thank all of the beautiful mamas (and their families) who joined us for delicious "mocktails" and gourmet truffles, as we celebrated the shop's first birthday. Congratulations to everyone who won a bonus certificate for $10-$100 off their next purchase, and those who won a free nursing or maternity top, or baby carrier of their choice. It was great to see many familiar faces, new babies and newcomers.

We've had a wonderful first year getting to know lots of moms and moms-to-be. We attended shows, actively worked in the community to promote breastfeeding, and proudly sponsored the Toronto and Mississauga Breastfeeding Challenges. We've had a lot of fun chatting with other moms during our Mama Walks and Thursday afternoon teas. We're planning many new and exciting things for our second year. We'll be at the Toronto Baby Time Show again this year, November 7-9 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Drop by our booth and say hi!

Be sure to visit the blog regularly for interesting news and information about pregnancy, breastfeeding, motherhood and events in the Evymama community!

Blissful Birthing and Breastfeeding

While you're choosing baby names and folding tiny onesies, don't forget to plan for a beautiful birth and happy breastfeeding!

Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Stretch Oil (for your stretching skin) and Third Trimester Tea (to tone the uterus) are your allies in this last, exciting phase of your pregnancy. For labouring, the Evymamas recommend Earth Mama Labour Ease Oil.

Organic Preggie Pop Drops are handy for nausea during labour and for quick calories when you're getting depleted from all that effort.

The Hot Spot Labour Sock is a tiny dry compress for applying heat to labour aches without overheating you. This is an excellent item for partners to offer you when the need arises.

A high quality nursing bra provides great support and quick, discreet breastfeeding access in a snap--it's the most basic essential for your breastfeeding career.

A nursing foot stool or nursing pillow does wonders for correct positioning of baby at the breast--essential for proper latching on (which is the key to successful nursing).

To keep nipples comfortable in the early days, The Evymamas recommend organic nipple butters by Motherlove and Earth Mama Angel Baby.

The Evymamas love organic cotton and merino wool nursing pads to ensure your dryness and confidence as you go about town with your new nursling.

To help a new mama relax and to encourage milk production, nursing teas and More Milk tinctures are 100% natural, and very effective. These contain some or all of the galactogogues (herbs to promote milk production) fenugreek, blessed thistle, fennel seed, nettle leaf, and goat's rue.

And remember-- a little self-care goes a long way. Nursing tops and dresses for every day and special occasions make nursing as easy as breathing. No need for struggling with regular clothes or baring your midriff to let your hungry baby eat. Never underestimate the power of a gorgeous nursing wardrobe!

And just in case you needed more reasons to breastfeed for as long as possible, check out this article. The World Health Organization and the Canadian Pediatric Society recommend breastfeeding for at least two years.

If you are planning a natural birth or would like to learn more about natural birthing and breastfeeding, we can answer your questions and point you to great books on these topics.

For all your birthing and breastfeeding needs, the Evymamas are here to help!
