Blissful maternity shopping and dressing: what to buy, when, and why, Part I

Shopping for a new maternity wardrobe can be daunting and confusing. To demystify this process for pregnant women, here are my suggestions as a mother of two, and as a maternity boutique retailer, to make the process more enjoyable, more beautiful, and more efficient.

Begin your maternity wear shopping when your lingerie (especially your bras) are becoming uncomfortable in any way, and/or when your trousers and skirts are getting snug.

Why? Correctly fitted nursing-maternity bras will not only save you from discomfort, but will save you from possibly doing damage to your growing breasts. Ill-fitting pants and skirts were not attractive when you weren't pregnant, and the same holds true(r) when you are pregnant!

I do not recommend using safety pins, rubber bands, or other makeshift contraptions to keep your unbuttoned trousers up, unless said item is a BellaBand. BellaBands are an adequate stop-gap for the period in-between regular-pants-that-will-not-and-should-not-close, and maternity pants. All other items leave you in danger of a wardrobe malfunction. I leave that to your imagination. Keep in mind that the BellaBand is just a temporary solution. It's not the pregnancy wardrobe "magic bullet" that some might suggest it is.

In addition to the improved appearance of maternity bottoms that fit, over your regular ones that do not fit at the moment, is the comfort factor. The skin on your belly needs tender attention, and chaffing waist bands (or safety pins!) will not be helpful in that regard. Begin using at this stage a pregnant belly salve, lotion or oil designed for pregnancy and which preferably does not contain chemicals or ingredients that you would not find in an organic grocery store. It will spare you itchiness and discomfort down the road as the skin on your abdomen grows taught. The jury is still out (I feel) on whether these creams will actually reduce the incidence of stretch marks, however!

Correctly fitted nursing-maternity bras will not only save you from discomfort, but will save you from doing possible damage to your growing breasts. I strongly suggest visiting Evymama for your breastfeeding brassieres if you live in, near, or are just visiting Toronto, not only because it is my business but because I know that the Evymamas will take good care of you. Of this, and a few other things in life I am sure. For others in urban centres having a shop with a wide selection of nursing bras and a competent staff, go there. If you live in a remote area, I do not suggest going to the local department store or mall-chain maternity shop without at minimum consulting our bra fitting guide first, as you will undoubtedly leave with the wrong size- and not by any fault of your own. You will be quite, quite alone in making your choices in one of those stores, and they (strangely) are unlikely to carry your size, no matter what that size may be (more on this another time- it's really a fascinating phenomenon!) I will not trouble to comment too much on the selection of nursing bras in big box stores. Suffice to say that the nursing bras at Evymama are superior in quality, size range, and appearance. I say this without boasting. It would be difficult to do worse than they do. Truly, if you live in a remote area, I humbly suggest shopping for your nursing bras in our online boutique, evymama.ca. Please do not, under any circumstances, buy regular, non-maternity clothing in "a size up".

Unless your intention is to spend good money on clothes that absolutely do not and will not at any stage fit you, do not do this. People may advise you to do this. I won't say anything about those people, except that they are giving out advice that they aren't qualified to give.

Although the reasons NOT to do this will be obvious to many, they might not be obvious to one and all. Let's look at what we know about regular clothing "in a size up" against what we know is happening with your body.

Clothing that is too large for you is just that. It is large in the shoulders, at the neck, at the small of your back, in the arms, in the crotch, and in the leg. (And yes, at the waist, but not large enough for your purposes.)

Fortunately, you will likely not be carrying a child in your throat, shoulders, or knees. Your breasts will grow, yes, quite a bit. You may swell a little in the arms and face and elsewhere. Your child and his entourage of placenta and waters, and your uterus, will grow massively. If your purpose was merely to cover your pregnant belly with some form of clothing, you would need to wear regular clothes "in four sizes up" to be "successful" in your endeavour (if such a thing could be considered a success by anyone but your enemies.)

When your waist has vanished, you will come to appreciate your lovely shoulders, your neck, your rib cage, your fabulous legs (your hair, your nails...) Why would anyone hide these features under yards and yards of improperly cut (I should say improperly selected) clothing?

I beg you not to do it. It's wasteful and misguided. You will have to buy a maternity wardrobe as well, in the end.

Listening to your "Mother's Intuition"

There are so many confusing signals, advertisements, pieces of advice, words-to-the-wise, articles, radio discussions, podcasts and forum posts out there, telling us how "best" to raise our children.

I have found, with my two children, that the only decisions I have regretted making regarding their health & upbringing were the times that I listened to something or someone while disregarding my own "Mother's Intuition"or in other words, ignoring what my heart was telling me.

My Mother's Intuition has saved my children's lives on occasion. It has averted dangerous situations, kept them happy and smiling, and frequently been proven true by one study or another at some later date.

I keep informed, of course, and have books on natural remedies, and read books and articles on parenting and children, selectively sorting out what I think makes sense and what I think is utter nonsense best left to rearing canines.

I breastfeed until the children quit on their own. I follow my hunches. I know that I know my children almost as well as they know themselves and what is "normal" for them. I believe in myself and my babies as we labour together when they are born. I trust our dyad to know instinctively what we need to do at all times, in all situations.

I have at times glimpsed the fact that "my heart" is actually my children themselves, the ones who made me into a mother, and who truly do know in their hearts what is going on with them, what they need, what is best for them.

The result is that I never feel defensive, haunted, or guilty when questioned about my parenting, my extended breastfeeding, or most anything I have done in my career as a mother while mothering from my heart, that is to say, following my children's cues and signals and really listening to them.

The other times will likely trouble me forever.

Why online shopping often makes sense for moms

Expectant mothers sometimes look at us like we're a little crazy when we suggest that they, who might live in Toronto (where Evymama Nursing & Maternity is located), should shop our web store when the baby comes along and have their nursing pyjamas, nursing pads, and nursing tops delivered to them.

"Why would I shop a Toronto store online when I live here?" or "why would I pay for shipping when I can pick it up for free?", they might be wondering.

Well, your time becomes extremely precious when you have a child, and your "free time" is even more so. You might need a few things when the baby is born that you would really love to rush out and get, but you really could be relaxing and getting breastfeeding off to a good start instead, which is what I humbly suggest that you do for the first ten days or so.

Don't feel silly for shopping a local store online. I do it all the time, and my kids are 6 and 4 years old. I don't really have time for shopping except for late at night when my little people are asleep, and my shop is closed.

If cost is your concern, just think of what your fuel is costing, or that a TTC round trip is $6.00. The $8.00 expedited shipping rate from Evymama to get the breastfeeding supplies you need starts to look pretty manageable, especially since you can sip your tea [coffee] as you shop, and never have to so much as put on your shoes to get them.

A nursing bra is not to be taken lightly!

Seriously, now, I am about to rant about nursing bras and their retail sale in Toronto and the GTA a little.

I do not often criticize other businesses, but I will here make an exception as I feel it is something of a public service.

If you are shopping at baby stores, department stores, maternity stores, and other stores in Toronto which are unreservedly flogging nursing bras and maternity bras without so much as removing them from the package for the customer, please read on.

These stores sell general baby accessories, and they imagine that a nursing bra is just another accessory in one-size-fits-all or three-sizes-fit-all-even-your-man-and-your-dog. They are very wrong (as you suspected I was going to say). And by the way, most of what they sell you do not need. But that is the stuff of another post.

I have seen too many ill-fitting nursing bras walking into my shop lately for nursingwear and I'm annoyed by the waste that they represent.

If someone tries to sell you a packaged nursing bra without AT LEAST checking the fit, do yourself a favour and walk out.

A nursing brassiere that fits you properly will make you look slimmer. Yes, it will! I do not lie. It will lift your bust away from your waistline and elongate your shape.

A nursing bra that has been nicely fitted will make your whole body feel better because you will be supported and will stand up straighter. Also true. Your back, breasts, neck, and legs will benefit from a good breastfeeding bra that is right for you.

A good breastfeeding bra that has been expertly fitted will lessen your chances of getting plugged ducts and the dreaded mastitis.

You will probably breastfeed for longer if you are happier with your nursing bra. This is somewhat anecdotal, but I'm willing to bet that it's a study in the making ;)

Buying a nursing bra (in a package or out of it) from someone who knows nothing of fitting will give you very, very low odds of having a proper fit. If you see baby formula, bras for non-nursing women, garden hoses, fishing rods, or microwave ovens for sale anywhere in the building, chances are they don't know much about breastfeeding there. Form your own opinions, of course.

Why nursing tops?

We frequently get asked this question at Evymama! We have all loved having nursing tops and breastfeeding- friendly dresses to wear out and around the house with our nursing kids. Here are some of our favourite reasons for wearing nursing clothing.

When you have a hungry child who needs a feed, there is nothing faster or easier to open with one hand than a good nursing top or nursing dress! This is reason #1, my favourite. Fast & easy is my favourite thing about breastfeeding, actually.

Nothing is easier than nursing your child in the carrier while wearing a great feeding top. Talk about multi-tasking! Shop, chat on the phone, nurse, and walk the dog all at the same time. You can feed right in the middle of your mother-and-child fitness class! Almost all of the Evymamas have worked at the boutique while wearing a baby in a sling, often feeding them at the same time.

If you're breastfeeding twins, or are a new mother, a nursing top will keep you warm and covered as you tackle the tougher task of latching nursing multiples or a new baby.

Many Canadian mothers prefer not to lift their tops up in the cold air that we have for 3/4 of the year!

Other mothers don't want to lift a regular shirt up and expose a postpartum tummy that they might prefer not to flash around.

Other moms still don't want to show any skin at all. For these moms, the best solution is a nursing top or dress. They give the best coverage, and don't get in baby's way as much as a nursing cover does.

Improving the neighbourhood!

You may or may not have met my husband, Darryl. It was his idea to form a business improvement area for our stretch of Jane Street and along a portion of Annette Street: the Baby Point Gates BIA. As the two streets meet at the gates outside Baby Point, it was logical to name the new BIA after them.

It took a lot of persuading, and there are still some naysayers, but after two years, several annual general meetings, two votes, and lots of stress and work, the Baby Point Gates BIA is formed.

My husband is now the chairman of the BIA board, and I myself along with some other business owners in the area am a part of the BIA's marketing committee.

The improvements to our area that our local patrons and patrons from other neighbourhoods and cities will see over the next two years will be amazing! Watch for improvements to the commercial area coming over the next year.

We really didn't realize what we were getting into with this contest.

It was impossible for The Evymamas to know just how many men out there rise to the challenge of New Fatherhood with love, strength, compassion, kindness, and wisdom! (And just how many of those do ALL the cooking, cleaning, and diapers!!!)

We heard from spouses and friends of men who put careers on the backburner, or made sweeping life changes for the better. We heard tell of men who put aside their personal wants and needs to support, nurture, and protect their familes. We read several stories of loss, of illness, and of miracles.

"...Demian and I tried a LONG time to have a baby. After three years of crying together and many doctors' appointments, IVF finally worked for us.

Our precious baby James was born 4 weeks early, on June 19th 2009, after I'd been in the hospital a week with high blood pressure (pre-eclampsia). Due to all the medication I was given, I was completely out of sorts for the first few days after the C-section once james was born. He was unable to breastfeed due to his tongue-tie, so Demian tube-fed him with his finger with my pumped breastmilk for the first few days while I rested and recuperated as much as possible.

He continued to tube-feed him when we brought James home in lieu of giving him a bottle for fear it would interfere with breastfeeding. He cried with baby James and me in frustration when we took him to Dr. Newman's clinic and they tried every strategy possible to get him to latch. They found his tongue-tie, which had been clipped, had grown back. I continued to pump at home and Demian continued to help with the feedings.

James is now a year old. This will be Demian's second Father's Day. His first was spent with 2-day-old James in hospital last year.

Since that time, not only has he helped me feed him, he's spent many days and weeks planting us an amazing organic garden of our own so baby James can have fresh produce to consume every day and through the Summer and Fall.

James is VERY attached to his daddy and I credit this to the early tube-feeding sessions they shared in his first days and weeks. What a way to bond.

He has gone out of his way to give James the love, affection, and attention he so deserves and needs to grow and thrive. He's also been amazing at taking care of me this past year (he does all the amazing cooking!) so that I, home every day with James, can feel rested and nourished enough to be the best mother I can be to him. Boy, do we love him so!"

Well, it looks like we MAY be on the National tonight. The topic is why many mothers stop nursing after hospital discharge.
I spoke briefly about the advantages of a midwife attended birth, and La Leche League, but forgot to mention doulas!
I also wish I had answered her question about "cosmetic reasons" for quitting nursing thus: breastfeeding helps your uterus to contract, and burns lots of calories. You also get bustier, giving you a very pretty curvy shape! What more could you ask for?
There are so many things to say on this topic, so I feel I didn't do it justice...but you know my heart was in the right place.

Toronto Breastfeeding Challenge 2009 wrap-up

The Toronto Breastfeeding Challenge was a success again this year in spite of the bad weather!
Approximately the same number of mamas (200) showed up for the big event.

Ponyo: a Disney movie that talks about breastfeeding!

It's rare that I'm totally wowed by a kids' movie.

We took our daughter and son to see this Japanese film tonight at The Cumberland, and we were just as impressed as the kids were.

The movie has an environmental theme, but isn't preachy. It's magical and cool, and age-appropriate for our 4.5 and 2.5 year-olds by virtue of its pace and content. Our little guy was pretending to be Ponyo [falling asleep and turning back into a fish] all the way home.

We usually find that Disney movies are too frenetically-paced for our little ones, and that some of the content is questionable as they try to sneak jokes in that are really meant for the adults watching.

With this in mind, we are REALLY impressed by Disney for presenting this film to a North American audience. They dubbed it with famous American actors' voices (people like Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Tina Fey & Lily Tomlin, to name a few).

Refreshingly, there were none of the ubiquitous baby bottles that you see in ALL American products for kids, and the character Ponyo even has breastfeeding explained to her by a nursing mom in this movie! I was so happy!

It was also a nice intro to some elements of Japanese culture and film for our babes.

We read some reviews that questioned "why the two five-year-olds get left at home in an emergency", or that called it "too weird" ...but this film is pure fantasy, so why not just embrace it for what it is, and not question it? Our kids found it exciting!

Last weekend, October 17-19, Evymama celebrated its first anniversary!

The Evymamas would like to thank all of the beautiful mamas (and their families) who joined us for delicious "mocktails" and gourmet truffles, as we celebrated the shop's first birthday. Congratulations to everyone who won a bonus certificate for $10-$100 off their next purchase, and those who won a free nursing or maternity top, or baby carrier of their choice. It was great to see many familiar faces, new babies and newcomers.

We've had a wonderful first year getting to know lots of moms and moms-to-be. We attended shows, actively worked in the community to promote breastfeeding, and proudly sponsored the Toronto and Mississauga Breastfeeding Challenges. We've had a lot of fun chatting with other moms during our Mama Walks and Thursday afternoon teas. We're planning many new and exciting things for our second year. While you're choosing baby names and folding tiny onesies, don't forget to plan for a beautiful birth and happy breastfeeding!

the birth of evymama

My dream of opening a breastfeeding boutique in Toronto is almost a reality! All that's left is the "opening" part.
I'm in the perfect neighbourhood, and the store looks perfect. (Except for a few minor details the contractor has to get to but is putting off doing...)
Trying to find just the right staff at this point.
We have the best selection of nursingwear in the city, including tops, dresses, bras and swimwear. I have a huge range of nursing pillows to go with the breastfeeding clothing, as well as nursing pads, milk tea, other breastfeeding accessories like breast pumps, baby carriers, and designer diaper bags. And it's all beautiful! Can't wait to open the doors to the customers.
